Making for the closest race in months, "The Smurfs" and "Cowboys & Aliens" ended up deadlocked at the box office over the weekend of July 28-30, 2011.
The Neil Patrick Harris/ Sofia Vergara fronted "Smurfs" film garnered approximately $12.7 million on Friday while raking in an estimated total of $36 million on its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde's sci-fi/thriller "Cowboys & Aliens" had equal numbers while making #13 million on opening day en route to a predicted $36.2 million weekend.
Rounding out the top five at the box office are the Chris Evans spearheaded "Captain America: The First Avenger" ($24.9 million), followed by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($21.9 million) and "Crazy, Stupid, Love" ($19.3 million).
